WARTBURG KNIGHT

4-door 4-seater saloon.

Appalling small 'people's car' from East Germany, with front-wheel drive and a three-cylinder two-stroke engine copied from DKW/Auto-Union. Sadly, this car was built in the usurped BMW factory, but no Bee Em quality remains. However, a roomy four-door shell, square-styled, with all-synchromesh transmission, and front discs from 1975. British imports stopped in 1976, but the car lives on behind the Iron Curtain. Poor handling, only 25mpg, and 75-80mph from 37bhp engine. Old 2-stroke replaced by VW Polo-type engine from 1988.
