A packed post-war lot list hosts some incredible classics at H&H's 8 October auction, but many eyes will be fixed on a coachbuilt Lotus Elan, which is estimated at £50-70,000.
The IWR-Lotus Elan GT was built by Ian Walker – Lancaster Bomber rear gunner, rally driver, and friend of Colin Chapman – for Swiss businessman Hermann Huber in 1965. The unique coachwork was sculpted in aluminium by Williams & Pritchard and, though a road car, it included many modifications discovered in the white heat of competition, such as a reinforced front bulkhead, rear anti-roll bar, oil cooler and twin brake servos.
The car was initially slated to have just two cowled headlamps, before a last-minute change was made to include quad lamps to give it the baby Gordon-Keeble look. They were originally designed to be level, but took on a staggered profile due to the front wheels fouling the light assembly on full lock.
The Elan remained in the Huber family collection for 37 years, only being let out on rare occasions – such as a C&SC road test in October 1987. It will be sold with a number of blueprints, correspondence from Ian Walker and a workshop manual.
A 1951 Allard K2 Roadster is also likely to draw plenty of attention. The car, which is estimated at £65-75,000, has been a long-term fixture in Dick Van Dijk's private museum in The Netherlands.
The car isn't currently registered for road use, but was the subject of a restoration in the 1990s, with Rod Jolley attending to the bodywork.
