Mille Miglia Mercedes tops billing at Amelia Island

Sir Stirling Moss' Mille Miglia-winning Mercedes-Benz will headline the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance from 13-15 March 2015. The 1955 300SLR is expected to travel to the Florida event to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Moss' famous victory.

The car, which is better known by its racing number – 722 – carried the British driver to success in the 1000 mile tour of Italy, breaking records in the process. He and co-driver Denis 'Jenks' Jenkinson recorded an average speed of 97.96mph  through the race, a feat that was never matched.

Moss, who opened the inaugural Amelia Island concours in 1996, is expected to accompany his World Sports Car Championship-winning race car.

"We intend to make the 20th anniversary Amelia Island Concours an unforgettable event," said Bill Warner, founder and chairman of the event. "Sir Stirling will be reunited with 722 on our 20th anniversary field on Sunday 15 March. This will be the first time in more than a decade that he has driven the car in America."
