1960s best buys, Jensen Interceptor at 50, plus insider view of XJ220 birth in the brilliant new issue

| 6 Oct 2016

If you’ve got an eye for a bargain you won’t want to miss the brand-new November issue of Classic & Sports Car (on sale 6 October), which is headlined by six 1960s icons that can be bought for less than £20,000.

The 50th anniversary of the Jensen Interceptor is celebrated with a thorough test of a Mk1 Interceptor and FF, a Jaguar XJ220 is taken back to the place where it was first driven on Britain’s roads, plus the 1990’s best tin tops from BMW, Volvo and Alfa Romeo do battle on track. Mick Walsh charts the restoration of an incredible Bugatti Atalante, while Wolseley 6/99 and Rover 3-Litre compete for your attention in our big saloon twin test. And don’t forget our buyer’s guide on the fantastic Porsche 911.

The market may be booming, but it’s still possible to buy a piece of 1960s automotive magic for less than £20,000, including true icons such as the Mini and Ford Mustang. For this month’s cover feature we gathered six of the decades biggest bargains, including the Lotus Elan, Lancia Fulvia Coupé, Citroën DS and MGC roadster, all of which can be had for less than the price of a new Ford Focus. As well as giving them a thorough leg stretch, the C&SC team tells you what to look for when buying.

The 50th anniversary of the Jensen Interceptor is celebrated in fine style by bringing together early examples of the Mk1 and four-wheel-drive FF. James Elliott chats with owners Keven Birch and Andy Kreis in an effort to discover what makes the Italian-styled, British-built and American V8-powered luxury coupés such enduring classics.

Even more glamorous is a 1937 Bugatti Atalante, once owned by Earl Howe and now reunited with the current Earl, Frederick Curzon, following its restoration. Found hidden in Yorkshire 10 years ago and sold at Retromobile in 2009, Mick Walsh charts the incredible 57S’s return to the limelight before slipping inside the teardrop beauty for a spirited drive around the country lanes it roamed when new.

The Jaguar XJ220 is almost as alien a sight on Britain’s roads today as it was 25 years ago. To mark the occasion, we took an incredible low-mileage example back to the location of that historic first drive, with none other than the man who was behind the wheel – chief development engineer Alastair Macqueen – to serve as our guide. What follows is a fascinating insight into the early development of what was once the fastest production car in the world.

Transport yourself to late 1950s middle England and chances are you’d be tempted by two stately saloons, the Rover 3-Litre and Wolseley 6/99. But does would the Wolseley’s smaller price tag be enough to lure you away from the sumptuous Viking-badged barge? Andrew Roberts weighs up the pros and cons of each.

In 1994, three executive saloons made the leap from the fast lane of the M1 to the most famous race circuits in Britain. Alfa Romeo’s 155 TS Silverstone, BMW’s 318iS and Volvo’s T5-R all made a name for themselves battling in the British Touring Car Championship, proving the old adage: win on Sunday, sell on Monday. Ross Alkureshi relives the glory days of the BTCC with a full-blooded drive around Rockingham.

Full coverage of the Goodwood Revival and Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance headline the news section, plus Chantilly Arts & Elegance, Salon Privé and the Concours of Elegance.

Variety is the spice of life in the Our Classics section, which this month features Julian Balme’s gas-guzzling Kandee-Twist and a new pedal-powered, eco-friendly debutant.

Your favourite columnists, Martin Buckley, Mick Walsh, James Elliott and Simon Taylor, are all present and correct, covering topics as diverse as the Syston Park Speed Trials and The French Connection.
