This is not just ‘any’ 1960 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II, if such a thing exists.
This is the HJ Mulliner Drophead Coupé that Dame Elizabeth Rosemond Taylor DBE – otherwise known as Liz Taylor – affectionately named her Green Goddess.
And just 40,644 miles and one more owner later, it’s being sold – with no reserve – through Guernsey's Auction at the Pierre Hotel in New York, a significant location because this is where she lived, with husband Eddie Fisher, when she bought this car.
Indeed, its unique ‘Smoke Green’ finish was Taylor’s favourite colour and Rolls-Royce colour-matched it to the dress she wore when she and Fisher married.
This car is one of around 20 left-hand drive Silver Cloud II drophead coupés built and it was ordered by Taylor in 1960, the year after her marriage to Fisher.
She collected it in the UK in early 1961 and then had it shipped to the US, before having it transported to Rome when she and Fisher went there for the filming of Cleopatra.
Of course, it was during that time that Taylor met and had an affair with Richard Burton, the showbiz couple marrying in 1964 – indeed, Burton was photographed driving this Rolls-Royce after it returned to the US.
