Classic & Sports Car – One-of-six Porsche comes to auction

Feast your eyes on this fabulous 1963 Porsche 356C Carrera 2 2000 GS Coupé that’s going under the hammer next month.

What makes this example stand out is that it’s one of only six right-hand drive coupés of its type built.

It’s one of the star lots at Silverstone Auctions’ Porsche Sale in association with Porsche Club GB, being held at the Dallas Burston Polo Club in Southam, Warwickshire, on 28 September.

Like what you see? It has a pre-sale estimate of £550,000-650,000.

Bali Blue is a special-order colour and looks fantastic

In fact, Harry Whale, classic car specialist at Silverstone Auctions, describes this as “an unrepeatable opportunity to acquire one of the rarest Porsches on sale today and in concours condition, no less.” So what warrants such high praise?

This 1963 Porsche was supplied new to ’60s Ferrari privateer racer Chris Kerrison, finished in the special-order colour of Bali Blue with a black leather interior and sunroof.

Kerrison used his 356 to get himself across Europe, where he raced his famous ex-Stirling Moss/Graham Hill Le Mans Ferrari 250GT SWB Berlinetta Competizione #2735GT.

John Hearn, well-known Essex-based Porsche Club member, took over ownership in 1978, before selling it in 1982 to respected four-cam Porsche engine specialist Manfred Knebel, in Germany.

The quad-cam, 2-litre engine has two small auxiliary oil radiators to improve cooling

Knebel hung onto the car for over two decades, maintaining it himself, including performing a full engine rebuild in 2006.

Soon after this, the Porsche was imported to the UK, where its fourth owner registered it on British plates for the first time in its life.

Its mechanical well being was entrusted to specialist Lee Maxted-Page and the car even achieved a second-place finish on the 2007 Tour de España-Portugal.

In 2010, the 356 passed to its fifth owner and current owner. It joined a large private collection and was entered into the Salon Privé Concours d'Elegance in 2012.

It’s estimated that this 85,798-mile 356C will sell for £550,000-650,000

Some lucky person will become owner number six next month.

The 356C Carrera 2 2000 GS was almost double the price of the standard model, making it Porsche’s top offering in 1964 – and it was the marque’s first car with four-wheel disc brakes.

It’s in concours condition, has 85,798 miles on its odometer, and will be sold with its history file plus original hand books and manuals.

“Cars of this type don’t come to market very often, and right-hand drive models hardly ever appear,” adds Whale.

“This is without doubt one of the most significant classics in this year’s Porsche Sale and I encourage interested buyers to contact the auction house directly to arrange inspections ahead of what is certain to be a highly anticipated sale.”
