One of the fastest of the pre-war racing Bentleys is set to star in the 76th Goodwood Members' Meeting this weekend.
The Pacey-Hassan Special will be one of the chief attractions in the inaugural Bolster Cup, lining up alongside a feast of other pre-war vintage classics.
The car, which dates from 1936 and which regularly tore up the Brooklands track in the late '30s, will be driven by William Medcalf, owner and founder of William Medcalf Vintage Bentley, on behalf of owner Andreas Pohl.
The Pacey-Hassan was built for speed. The work of Wally Hassan, one of the greatest Bentley mechanics of the time, it was born out of Bentley owner and racer Bill Pacey's desire for a single-seater with which to attack the Brooklands outer circuit.
And he got his wish: the Pacey-Hassan’s fastest lap at Brooklands was 129.03, recorded in August 1938, a mark which saw it awarded the coveted 120mph badge.
William Medcalf said, “To race a car as special as this for the first time on a circuit as evocative and historical as Goodwood is an immense privilege and also a challenge.
