This 2002 RenaultSport Clio V6 set a new world record yesterday (25 October 2020) when it sold for £62,540 (including fees) on Collecting Cars.
It attracted 84 bids on the online automotive auction platform en route to eclipsing the €61,984 (£52,848 using 2017 data) achieved by an example from the same year, at Artcurial’s Rétromobile sale on 10 February 2017.
A Phase 1 example with a mere 2106 miles on the clock, it also featured in the July 2018 issue of Classic & Sports Car and was with the same owner prior to this weekend’s sale.
Removing the rear seats and mounting a three-litre, all-alloy V6 in the middle of the chassis, with power going to the rear wheels, was always going to create the kind of car that enthusiasts would fall for and give it serious future-classic status, especially here in the UK which was the V6’s best market.
Back in our July 2018 magazine, we were championing it is a modern classic and it’s clear its star is rising.
