Exactly 65 years ago today the very first Seat rolled off the production line at the Zona Franca factory in Barcelona.

The car, a Seat 1400, had the registration number B-87.223 and arrived just three years after the Spanish company had been created.

Five vehicles a day were built during the first year of production and come the end of the 1400’s initial run in 1954, 1345 units had been produced – but that was just the beginning of the model’s life.

Next came the 1400 A in 1954, followed by the 1400 B of ’56 and 1960’s 1400 C, along with a number of special versions.

Buyers of the first Seat had to spend 117,000 pesetas (around €705 or £616), which got them a four-door, front-engined, rear-wheel-drive saloon.

Aesthetics were inspired by the American market with curved, one-piece windscreens, while power came from a 1395cc, four-cylinder engine with 44hp and a 120kph (75mph) top speed.

It also had a four-speed manual gearbox and a 48-litre fuel tank, which would give a decent range, considering it was quoted to achieve 27mpg, as well as drum brakes front and rear.

The 1400 family models continued to be built until 1964, with annual production reaching 10,000 in 1957, and nearly all the components were sourced from within Spain.

In total, 98,978 units were sold and Seat is now an internationally renowned car manufacturer.

And it all began 65 years ago today – many happy returns!
