Classic & Sports Car – Volkswagen goes classic rallying!

If you’re in the Saxony region of Germany over the next few days, keep your eyes peeled – you might see some tasty classics!

The Sachsen Classic comes to the area from 22-24 August and because Volkswagen supports this regularity rally, its heritage division is fielding five classic coupés in the event.

And for more classic appeal, two Volkswagen T2 food trucks will be at the finish at Simonsplatz in Leipzig on Saturday, one serving currywurst, the other ice cream – what’s not to love?

As you can see, VW crews will be campaigning two pretty Karmann Ghias, a 1970 TC 145 and a Type 14 from 1974 with an unusual Saturn Yellow Metallic paintjob.

In addition, an SP 2 made in 1974 – a model only built in Brazil – will take the start, as well as an ’81 Scirocco I SL, this a sporty, special-edition model with aluminium rims and a front spoiler.

The fifth and youngest of this quintet is a 1983 Passat B2 CL Formula E where the ‘E’ stands for ‘Economy’ – it even has a start-stop system.

It’s the Sachsen Classic’s 17th running which this year will take in almost 580km (360 miles) between Dresden and Leipzig, and is for pre-’76 cars, plus selected modern classics built up to 1999.
