It’s one of the most evocative of all registrations – and now the numberplate '2 GTO’ could be yours.
While not quite as expensive as the Ferrari 250GTO cars to which it pays homage, the ’plate will be going to auction in September with an estimate of £150,000 to £250,000.
Anything above the £200,000-mark will put it straight into the top 10 most expensive private plates ever sold in the UK – although some way behind the worldwide record, which stands at a reported £7m for the registration “1”.
The ’plate has lived an eventful life, having been fitted to a succession of rather ordinary cars thus far.
Originally fixed to an Austin Healey ‘Frog Eye’ Sprite, the current owner bought it in 1970 and has subsequently fitted it to a Rover SD1, Peugeot 505, Honda Accord Coupé and, most recently, a Peugeot 407, among others.
