Car shampoo is a straightforward thing, really, and all of the products in this test did the basic job of getting the grime off. But there are big differences in the finish that the shampoo provides, and whether it keeps the paintwork protected after you’ve put the sponge away, or not.
With options ranging from supercar-branded shampoo to budget, bulk-buy options, there’s a big spread out there to choose from.
We used the ‘two-bucket’ method to test shampoos, keeping one bucket with clean, soapy water, and another separate for rinsing out the dirty microfibre mitt or sponge.
The car was cool to the touch when we did the shampooing, to make sure that it didn’t dry too quickly before we dried it with a clean cloth, so that we could assess the finish properly.

10. Mer High Shine shampoo
Min price per litre £10.15
The Mer car shampoo has rather hyper-masculine branding that follows right the way through to the product, which actually smells like aftershave.
