France has a long tradition of graphic art and from the earliest comics, such as L’illustré National and L’Épatant, the automobile in all forms has inspired illustrators.

Specialist comic shops around France and Belgium are packed with a wealth of titles, ranging from motoring innovators to racing legends, historic Gallic roads to futuristic forms of travel.

Award-winning illustrator Christophe Merlin follows in that wonderful tradition, with a bold style that has featured in books, magazines, posters and comic-art festivals.

Christophe’s lifelong passion for cars has inspired much of his work, including a book on Juan Manuel Fangio’s legendary 1957 German Grand Prix victory and Renault sans limites, the story of the Étoile Filante record-breaker.

More recently, Christophe has collaborated with historian Jean-Louis Loubet and motoring writer Laurent-Frédéric Bollée on a new production, L’Incroyable histoire de l’Automobile.

Published by Les Arènes, this 400-page paperback is illustrated throughout by Christophe’s colourful artwork, ranging from Walter Hancock’s steam-powered omnibus to the mass importation of Chinese BYD cars on a 16-storey container ship.

Styling, motorsport, production changes, historic figures and social impact are highlighted via thousands of illustrations.

Born in 1966, Christophe grew up with comics and toy cars gifted by his father.

“I particularly loved The Adventures of Tintin by Hergé, and Blake and Mortimer by Edgar P Jacobs,” recalls Christophe.

“The illustrations on model-kit boxes and Solido catalogues, drawn by Jean Blanche, also captivated me. I loved spending hours drawing.”

Early motorsport ambitions were shattered after a go-kart accident when he was 17.

Unable to walk for nine months, recovery brought a renewed focus on his artistic talent.

“I discovered new artists including Géo Ham and Alexis Kow,” says Christophe, “while contemporary cartoonists Denis Sire and Ever Meulen inspired me.

“My first comic, Pedal to the Floor, was published in 1989. It was a naïve story of racing drivers torn between competition glory and romantic trouble.”

Christophe has a long history of classics, starting with a Triumph TR3: “I’ve owned it for 25 years and for a time it was my only car.

“We’ve criss-crossed France together in uncomfortable style. I’ve always loved English sports cars – my dream would be a Frazer Nash or an Invicta – but my best motoring memories are with my 1968 Alfa Romeo 1750 GTV.

“I don’t have time to attend classic events, but enjoy going on drives with friends.”

As well as extensive research, Christophe relishes searching out historic photos and vintage toys to sketch.

His latest project is a series of prints inspired by ’50s Grand Prix and Le Mans racers.

“Using digital techniques, I have tried to recreate the lithography and screen-printing style of the era,” he says.

“Subjects range from a GP Gordini to a Maserati 450S. It makes a welcome break from my latest commission for Les Arènes, A History of Democracy.”

Christophe Merlin’s books and prints are available via Librairie Passion Automobile in Paris and Librairie Bulle, Le Mans
