From rebuilding Lancia Aurelias in a home garage in the 1990s to a packed unit on an industrial park near Zandvoort, the Dutch Schouwenburg brothers have built up an impressive reputation for Italian classics at Strada e Corsa.

Highlights include concours-winning work on Siatas and Fiat 8Vs that put these underappreciated rarities back on the map.

“Our interest started with my father,” says Lennart, the younger Schouwenburg. “He was a doctor, Italian cars were his hobby.”

“When I was born, I was collected from the hospital in a green Alfa Romeo Duetto that we still own,” he recalls.

“He also raced a Ferrari 250 SWB in the ’70s and during the summer we’d go to Zandvoort and the Nürburgring.

“He worked on the cars himself in a garage next to our house.

“My brother rebuilt the suspension on an Aurelia at the age of 14 and that really developed a passion for the mechanical aspect of these wonderful cars.

“‘Jurri’ helped my father prepare his cars and loved reading technical books.”

“Eventually he started servicing cars for my father’s friends, but he had a problem ordering parts because he didn’t speak Italian,” Lennart continues.

“I began calling a Torino specialist that Dad knew and my involvement started from there.

“One holiday to Italy we stopped at the specialist, who presented Dad with an outstanding €400 bill for the brake parts his children had ordered.

“Thankfully he saw the funny side!

“Things were different in the pre-internet days, and from the beginning I helped find parts for clients.”

“The business grew from there. We still look after a very original Alfa Romeo 1900 that was one of our first customers,” he adds.

The focus on Fiat 8V-powered sports cars happened by chance, when a client enquired whether the Schouwenburgs could restore a Zagato-bodied Siata.

They have now been involved with 26 since 2008, including class winners at Pebble Beach and Villa d’Este: “We do all the mechanical work and assembly but manage the rest of the restoration through trusted Italian specialists.

“We believe a one-stop-shop doesn’t work, and we’d rather find the best with unique skills.”

As well as its stock of parts, Strada e Corsa now offers remanufactured components

The Strada e Corsa team also prepares cars for racing and rallies: “We have invested in the remanufacture of new parts and can now offer a new 8V engine.

“We believe in authenticity but refine the engineering to make the 8V more reliable.

“The gears are better steel and the alloy castings are stronger,” explains Lennart.

Strada e Corsa has also developed a reputation for Aurelias and early Alfa Romeo Giuliettas.

Strada e Corsa has a thriving car sales business, too

“Projects have a habit of arriving in waves,” says Jurriaan.

“We’ve just finished a genuine 1954 Mille Miglia Giulietta, and have a 1957 Veloce Lightweight from the USA that had been raced for many years in California.

“The owner wants to return it to more original specification for rallies.

“Aurelias are very special to me; they are where my passion started. The cars are so beautifully made, I love working on them.”

Strada e Corsa has restored and prepared etceterinis, too, including a Dagrada 750 Sport for the Mille Miglia.

The team is small, which is how the Schouwenburg brothers prefer it.

“Matthijs Borst specialises on machining, and Daan Stralea works on electrics,” says Lennart. “Twan Smit helps me with parts and sales.”

The love of Italian classics goes deeper than business, and both have contrasting cars.

Jurri races an Alfa Romeo GTA, while Lennart is keen on the later competition Alfas, particularly DTM.

“We’d love to bring our ex-Larini 1993 championship winning 155 to Goodwood,” he says.
