Two dozen cars from the personal collection of late racer and designer Carroll Shelby are to go on sale with no reserve at Bonhams' Greenwich auction this summer.
Among the highlights are the 1969 Shelby GT500 that Shelby acquired from Oscar-nominated actor Jackie Cooper Jr, plus chassis 0001 of his own 1999 Shelby 1 Series. There's also a 2011 Shelby Cobra CSX 8027 – the Le Mans winner's personal example of his CSX 8000-series of modern Cobras.
Other classics in the 24-strong consignment include a 1935 Chrysler Airflow Sedan – thought to have been acquired from the late actor Steve McQueen – and the 1982 Dodge Shelby Charger Prototype.
The latter is particularly notable, as it represents the first collaboration between Shelby and Dodge, a relationship that would ultimately lead lead to the creation of the Dodge Viper.
Michael Caimano, Bonhams Motoring Specialist, said, “Carroll Shelby is synonymous with American racing and performance vehicles and his contribution to the motoring world is priceless. What a privilege it is to represent many of his personal cars.”
