Only 19 Aston Martin DB4GT Zagatos were ever made, which makes everyone sit up and take notice on the rare occasion that one becomes available on the open market. It becomes even more noteworthy when the car is as good as chassis 0186 – the 14th example built and one of the stars of RM Sotheby’s forthcoming New York auction, which takes place on 10 December.
Estimated to fetch up to £12m, the Zagato is unquestionably one of the most beautiful and desirable cars ever built. RM’s Driven by Disruption sale could see the model reach the rarified heights usually reserved for the Ferrari 250s with which it battled in period.
Chassis 0186 was sold new to Australia, where it was campaigned with great success for a number of years. It stayed there for most of its life before eventually being sold to an English collector, who had the car fully resorted by marque specialist Richard Williams. Post-restoration, the Zagato has kept up its winning ways with a number of successful appearances at the world’s top concours events, including class honours at both Pebble Beach and Villa d’Este.
In truth, though, the pictures speak for themselves.
