Classic & Sports Car – Classics set to sparkle in African sale

The oldest Jaguar XK in South Africa is one of the star lots at next month's Coys sale in Johannesburg (10-11 August).

Billed as 'the biggest-ever auction of classic cars in Africa', it is taking place in association with Concours SA, an event in its third year, which draws over 100 cars from across the south of the continent.

The 1950 Jaguar XK120 Roadster is one of several interesting cars set to go under the hammer at the Steyn City Golf Course complex, including a 1954 Triumph TR2 and an original, unrestored 1971 Porsche 911T.

A pair of Porsches, a ’69 Ferrari 365GT 2+2 and a TR2 will go under the hammer

A one-of-406 Porsche 924 Carrera GT from 1981 and a 1969 Ferrari 365GT 2+2 – one of 52 right-hand-drive versions built – are also due to be sold at this South African auction.

In addition, a Mk1 Ford Cortina racing car, an original and unrestored two-owner 1968 Ford Shelby 500 GT, a 1955 Austin Healey 100 BN1 and a ’73 Renault Alpine 1600S will cross the block.

And then there's a 1962 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Veloce. A red, right-hand-drive car with a black interior, it's been the subject of a top-notch restoration in recent years and has been used very little since.

The auction features these two Fords, plus a ’73 Renault Alpine and ’55 Healey

"I have worked in Africa now for many, many years developing close associations with historic South African car culture; it is in my bones and in my veins," said Chris Routledge, managing director of Coys. "I am so excited that we are doing this and that the time is now."

Nick Wells, lead auctioneer at Coys, added, "I have been working on this event closely with the organisers of Concours SA and from what was initially a commercial event of modest aspirations we have now created an event for the African classic-car market of global relevance of which we are justly proud.

"I am very much looking forward to taking this sale – the first of its type in Africa – and creating history.”
