Croft hosts record-breaking Festival

The sixth Croft Nostalgia Festival attracted a record crowd to the Yorkshire circuit over the weekend of 8-9 August, with the on-track action combining with classic-car displays, military vehicles and overhead aerobatics.

John Pringle opened proceedings with victory in the Historic Road Sports race, the Lotus Seven driver finishing well clear of his rivals. Jim Dean was second in his Europa, with Charles Barter (Datsun 240Z) in third.

David Methley (Merlyn) recovered from a final-lap spin to take the chequered flag in the Historic Formula 3 encounter, while Jonathan Hughes was the dominant force among the Formula Junior pack – on the Saturday, at least. Hughes’ fastest lap aboard his Brabham BT6 was an incredible four seconds clear of anyone else, but he had to give best to James Murray in Sunday’s re-run.

The top finishers in the first of two Historic Formula Ford races were covered by only eight seconds, as Rob Wainwright bested Callum Grant. Sunday’s race was cut short following an accident, with James Buckton leading at the time.

Andrew Park claimed the double in the Formula Ford races, while other winners included Warren Briggs (Ford Mustang), John Harrison (Mallock Mk21) and Peter Needham (Tiga).

Away from the track, the British Army brought a significant diorama to showcase its current hardware, while on Sunday an American Sherman tank performed lunchtime manoeuvres in the middle of the circuit.

Falklands veteran Martin Withers was again at the controls of the Avro Vulcan bomber for its impressive display, making his thunderous exit on full power.

Circuit Manager Mike Cantelo said: "This was by far the biggest and best Croft Nostalgia Festival that we've ever put together. What a fantastic weekend, and the Vulcan was just the icing on the cake."
