Motor Sport Hall of Fame shortlists announced

The Porsche 917, McLaren MP4/4, Gilles Villeneuve, AJ Foyt and Hans-Joachim Stuck are among the nominees for this year's Motor Sport Hall of Fame awards.

A 15-stong shortlist across five categories – including a new one for racing cars – has been announced, following a poll that attracted more than 40,000 respondents.

The winners will be revealed, and inducted into the Hall of Fame, at the Royal Automobile Club Woodcote Park estate on 4 June. Previous inductees have included Ayrton Senna and Stirling Moss.

The McLaren MP4/4 won an incredible 93.8% of the 1988 F1 Grands Prix

Each of the five categories has three nominees, and none is likely to be more closely contested than the new Racing Cars shortlist, which will see the Porsche 917 go up against the McLaren MP4/4 and the Audi Quattro.

The Porsche was near-unbeatable in 1970 and '71, winning at Le Mans both years and taking victory in 14 out of the 17 World Sportscar Championship races in which it was entered. The Quattro, meanwhile, revolutionised rallying when it appeared in 1980 as the first full-time four-wheel drive entrant. Three wins followed in 1981 – including one for Michele Mouton, the first woman ever to win a WRC event.

Within its own world, the McLaren was even more successful than the Porsche or Audi: in the 1988 Formula One season, and with the formidable duo of Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna behind the wheel, it placed first in 15 out of the season's 16 Grands Prix.

Hans-Joachim Stuck won the '86 and '87 Le Mans 24 Hours in a Porsche 962C

Of the four driver categories, Sports Cars looks particularly strong: it features Hans-Joachim Stuck, Henri Pescarolo and Pedro Rodriguez.

AJ Hoyt, Phill Hill and a Richard Petty make for an impressive trio in the US Racing section, while Jenson Button is up against Gilles Villeneuve and Cosworth engine designers Mike Costin and Keith Duckworth in the F1 stakes.

Finally, two-wheel legends Mike Hailwood, Joey Dunlop and Kenny Roberts will compete for the Motorcycles honour.
