Classic & Sports Car – Porsche builds final 993 turbo

Two decades after production finished, Porsche has produced the last air-cooled 911 turbo.

Known as 'Project Gold', it's the work of Porsche's classic department and will debut at Laguna Seca for the Porsche Rennsport Reunion on 27 September.

A month later it will go under the hammer at RM Sotheby's auction at the Porsche Experience Center in Atlanta, Georgia.

Based on an original 993 bodyshell, Porsche states that this special 911 is "limited to use on private tracks".

Its chassis number follows the last series-production 993 turbo which rolled off the production line in 1998.

An original bodyshell and a brand-new engine were used

Porsche Classic's extensive supply of parts for 993s – over 6500 – was key to the success of this 18-month build.

The first step was to treat the bodyshell with a corrosion protection and painting process that's applied to today’s production models.

Assembly took place in Stuttgart at Porsche's restoration workshop, where the brand-new, 450hp, 3.6-litre, twin-turbo flat-six was installed, while its manual gearbox was from Porsche Classic's parts supply.

The Golden Yellow Metallic paint references the 2018 911 Turbo S Exclusive Series, this shade also used for detailing on the black wheels, seats and cabin trim.

Eagle-eyed readers may see that this car has the side air intakes of the 993 turbo S, which were optionally available on the standard 911 turbo in 1998.

The funds raised from this car's sale will go to the Ferry Porsche Foundation, a non-profit organisation established this year to mark the '70 years of Porsche sports cars' celebrations.
