Classic & Sports Car – See this stunning Talbot-Lago at Concours of Elegance

A Talbot-Lago T150C SS Teardrop Coupé will be one of the stars at this year’s Concours of Elegance, which takes place from 30 August-1 September.

The Figoni et Falaschi-bodied rarity will be one of 70 concours cars competing for the coveted Best in Show award at Hampton Court Palace this summer.

Fewer than 30 Talbot-Lago T150C SS models were built in the late 1930s.

A roadgoing version of Talbot’s open-wheel T150C racer, the T150C SS Teardrop Coupé was supposedly Antonio Lago’s idea for a car inspired by French artist Géo Ham’s work, entrusted to Paris-based coachbuilder Figoni et Falaschi.

The example heading to Concours of Elegance 2024 is one of the ‘New York’ models, named after the subtly tweaked iteration that first appeared at the New York Auto Show and built from 1937-’38.

It’s also the only example built without a sunroof. Instead, its twin windscreens open outwards to cool the cabin.

The Talbot-Lago T150C SS was restored during industrial designer Brooks Stevens’ ownership

This car was sold new to Freddie McEvoy, an Australia-born British socialite and sportsperson whose adventurous pastimes included skiing, motorsport and yachting.

He was also a successful bobsledder, winning a bronze medal at the 1936 Winter Olympics and being the flag-bearer for the UK squad.

A few years later, the Teardrop Coupé was delivered to Los Angeles after it was bought by American businessman Tommy Lee, who used the car for racing throughout the 1940s.

The Talbot-Lago’s elegant Figoni et Falaschi bodywork disguises its racing-car origins

Following Lee’s death, the Talbot-Lago was bought by industrial designer Brooks Stevens who continued to race the car in America, including at Watkins Glen in 1957.

He eventually decided to restore the rare Teardrop Coupé and return the paintwork to its original specification.

Stevens’ fastidious restoration, and the care of its subsequent owners, makes this Talbot-Lago T150C SS one of the most original examples of this elegant coupé.
